Student R3 Testing Protocol

The new Raider Rapid Results (R3) testing protocol requires students living on campus, and students wishing to engage in specific activities on campus, to participate free of charge in frequent testing using the R3 PCR test in accordance with guidance from the State System. Details regarding Fall 2021 will be updated beginning in June.

Frequent testing is an effective practice for mitigating the spread of COVID-19. Testing has been a part of the strategy for managing the spread with students since our return to campus in Fall 2020. In addition to continued best practices of testing, mask wearing, social distancing and de-densifying on campus, for spring 2021, the R3 expanded testing protocol is now included in the mitigation strategy. Details regarding Fall 2021 will be updated beginning in May.

How R3 Works

  • Go to your scheduled appointment at The CUB’s Airport Lounge, room 125. 
  • Complete your intake paperwork by answering a few simple questions. 
  • Show your SU ID.  
  • Licensed technicians will perform a non-invasive nasal swab.
  • You will be notified via email or phone call of test results typically within 1-2 business days.
  • Students are expected to keep their masks on, maintain social distance, attend classes and participate in campus activities while awaiting test results.
  • The SU COVID-19 office will reach out if necessary, through email or phone.   

The R3 program will issue a supplemental card with your name and test date. The card shows that you are current with the testing program, not whether the test is positive or negative.

Testing protocols have changed for Spring 2021

Test Negative? This is Important!

R3 testing is only a supplement to stringent mitigation protocols. A negative test does not change the need to continue to adhere to mask wearing, social distancing and limiting exposure.

All mitigation protocols remain mandatory on campus and members of the community should continue these practices when away from campus for the health and well-being of the entire community.

Test Positive? This is Important!

Students who test positive for COVID-19 will self-isolate for 10 days or will extend self-isolation until cleared by the SU COVID Office following the most current CDC guidance. Students who are exposed to a COVID-19 positive person will follow the appropriate 10-day quarantine guidelines.

The Registrar and Academic Dean will be notified about the planned period of isolation/quarantine (who will inform faculty of the learning platform change, if applicable) and the move to remote learning for the duration of this period, if needed.

Students who live on campus who test positive for COVID-19 will be assisted by the SU COVID Office to choose isolation:

  • in a university provided, off-campus location
    • Residence Life, Student Affairs, and the COVID Office staff will assist the student in relocation
  • by returning home
    • Assisted by Residence Life and Student Affairs staff, the student will make immediate arrangements for leaving campus and returning home.

Students who live off campus who test positive for COVID-19 will be assisted by the COVID Office to determine their 10-day isolation plan at either a current local residence or return home.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Residential Students 

  • Residential students must follow the R3 protocols.
  • Ship has implemented a Surveillance Model for residential students where a percentage of the population will be mandated each week to participate in testing.
  • Students who do not follow the R3 protocol will be required to follow a quarantine protocol to determine the student is not COVID-19 positive.

Non-Residential Students 

Raider Rapid Results is a voluntary program for non-residential students, but if you are interested in increasing your on-campus experience, sign up today so that you will be ready to participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, clubs, club sports and intramurals, athletics, student organizations with weekly meetings and large events by signing up and adhering to the Raider Rapid Results (R3) testing program.

Participating groups with more signing on every day:

  • Athletics
  • Marching Band/Choir/Brass Ensembles
  • Intramural Sports 
  • Club Sports 
  • ShipRec- to use ShipRec, students will be required to test weekly 
  • ROTC
  • Fraternity/Sorority

Not in the R3 program but want to participate in activities on campus?

In some cases, students who do not travel to campus often, may want to participate in activities that require R3 testing. If you would like to participate in a program/event that requires participating in the R3 program and anticipate this being a one-time occurrence, please contact the SU COVID office at covid19@ship.edu for consideration.

Infrequent meetings of fewer than 10 people (depending on location) may be exempt from the R3 program. Please contact the SU COVID office at covid19@ship.edu for specifics.


Exemptions from testing 

  • Tested Positive: If you have tested positive in the past 60 days, you will be exempt from testing until day 61.
  • Vaccinated: If it has been 12 days since receiving your final vaccination.

You must provide proof of the above to the SU Covid office to obtain an exemption card. Please contact the SU COVID office at covid19@ship.edu for additional information.

COVID-19 EXPOSURE

If a student is identified as having come in close proximity for more than 15 minutes with someone who tests positive, the student will be asked to quarantine for a minimum of 10 days.

Students who live on campus who are exposed will quarantine in their residence hall room/suite for 10 days and will:

  • self-monitor wellness twice daily (Residence Life staff will check in daily)
  • choose meals each day and a supply of snacks to be delivered
  • participate in remote learning

Students who live off campus who are exposed will:

  • quarantine at their local residence or return home
  • self-monitor wellness twice daily and check in with a member of health services
  • participate in remote learning

CASE INVESTIGATION

When a student has reported testing positive for COVID-19, the University case investigation Team (CIT) will:

  • Perform a personal interview with the student.
  • Use a case investigation process to assess the class schedule, living situation, activities, on-campus work locations, face-to-face meetings and any other situations that may have resulted in close contact from two (2) days prior to a confirmed positive test result.
  • Team members are trained by Johns Hopkins University and follow guidelines set by the CDC and the Commonwealth. 
  • Use a contamination tracing a service, Campus Pulse, to assist with COVID-19 mitigation. This social density tracking system uses anonymous data to assist in case investigation.
  • Notify all members of the campus community who have been identified as exposed and assist in appropriate quarantine protocols.
